At the age of 22, Sue Ann Carlson-Evers had a pacemaker put in to regulate the beating of her heart and by the time she was in her late twenties she was 100 percent dependent on it.
Now, the 42-year-old mother of two reflects on those days by saying, "Every young girl thinks of her 20s as a time when you should feel strong and indestructible. Instead, I felt like a ticking time bomb, defective and vulnerable."
Soon after her surgery, Sue Ann married and started a family. It was then that she began to "really" live, remembering that she needed to be strong and look strong for her two young daughters.
But today, Sue Ann has found herself struggling with weight and not knowing what the right mix of diet and exercise should be for someone with her condition. And, February 9, 2010 marks the 20-year anniversary of her first open heart surgery. She says it's perfect timing to be reassured that she can do anything.
"My heart truly is as strong as my will to succeed. I'm ready for the rest of my life to begin and it starts now with the Go Red For Women Makeover."
"I believe in myself and I am Going Red for my heart. I want to live. I'm up for this fight."
