Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment Can Help You Stay Healthy 

Does cancer run in your family? Knowing your cancer risk through the Regional Cancer Center's Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment Program can help you receive appropriate screenings, medications and other measures to keep you healthy.

You may consider genetic counseling if: DNA

  • You've already had cancer and are concerned about the risk of additional cancers for yourself and other family members.
  • A close family member or several family members have had cancer and you want to determine if you're at risk.
  • Your family is known to have an inherited cancer syndrome.
  • You have another medical condition that may increase your risk, such as non-cancerous colon polyps.

The Regional Cancer Center's Cancer Genetic Risk Assessment Program uses a team approach under the medical direction of noted oncologist Paul LeMarbre, M.D. to do a thorough assessment of your genetic cancer risks and develop appropriate medical recommendations.

"Cancer genetics is a dynamic field," says Cancer Genetic Counselor Ann Schmidt, M.S., C.G.C. "We offer advanced genetic testing options as well as interpret results and make recommendations based on the latest proven research."

If genetic testing is pursued, your genetic counselor and a physician will meet with you to discuss your results and the meaning for you and your family. They will help you develop a plan for managing your cancer risk and staying healthy.
