High Blood Pressure and Sleep - What You Need to Know

Clinical studies have shown a link between high blood pressure and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is a common condition in which the upper airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing a decreased airflow that can stress the heart and raise blood pressure. If untreated, OSA may cause excess stress on your heart, increasing the risk of uncontrolled blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

You may be at risk for OSA if you answer yes to two or more of the following questions:

  • Do you snore?
  • Do you stop breathing during sleep?
  • Do you feel sleepy during the day?
  • Do you have a history of high blood pressure?

If you think you may have OSA, talk to your doctor or call ProHealth Care's Sleep Center at (262) 928-4043.
