Patients at ProHealth Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital will be a little more comfortable during their MRI exams, thanks to a new wide bore MRI scanner.
The scanner is faster, roomier and quieter than other MRI machines. It is the centerpiece of a new state-of-the-art examination suite that also includes a preparation room for patients and an MRI control room.
The wider bore of the new Siemens Wide Bore MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T MRI scanner provides a more spacious experience for patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging scans, increasing comfort levels for larger patients and those who are claustrophobic. The scanner features:
A 70-centimeter (2.3 feet) bore, or tube-like structure, where patients lie for the scan. It can accommodate patients weighing up to 550 pounds.
Increased scanning speed, meaning that patients spend less time in the scanner.
Noise-reduction technology, making scans 70 percent quieter than with conventional scanners.
An ultra-short bore (145 centimeters, 4.75 feet) that allows many exams to be performed with the patient’s head outside of the covered area.
Custom mood lighting and soothing music that contribute to a calming environment.
High-quality images that enable physicians to make quicker and more accurate diagnoses.
“I expect that patients will find the MRI experience to be more relaxing overall, from changing in the private patient area to having the MRI,” said Jeffrey Fete, MD, a radiologist at ProHealth Care. “Exams are faster and more comfortable for patients of many different body types and ages, and diagnostics are more time-sensitive.”
A MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T MRI scanner also is located in the radiology department within ProHealth Medical Group’s Pewaukee office, just north of the interchange at I-94 and Highway 164.
Magnetic resonance imaging is a powerful tool that uses a magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to create detailed images of bones, organs and tissues within the body. It supports a wide range of applications, including neurology, orthopedics, body imaging, angiography, cardiology, breast imaging and oncology.
