Popular ProHealth Senior Breakfast Club has something for every senior

Tuscan Hall in Waukesha has become a popular place for seniors who attend the ProHealth Senior Breakfast Club there. The free monthly meetings engage seniors in health and wellness while providing an important social outlet.

“We come for what we learn,” said Carol Barwick of Oconomowoc, who regularly attends with her husband, Ron. “The speakers share so much knowledge.”

Ron Barwick said he also enjoys meeting the others who attend. “When you sit among a group of people, you discuss and share information,” he said. “Some people are more comfortable bringing up health care in a group where they can say, ‘I know someone who experienced this.’ ”

The Barwicks are proactive about their health and health care, and said they have acted on information that they have received at Senior Breakfast Club meetings and from ProHealth materials. They have had health care screenings, received contact information for health care providers and called club speakers to ask additional questions. Ron Barwick even called a speaker from the Waukesha Police Department and thanked the officer for his service to the community.

“The senior population has to be made aware of new health care methods and resources,” Carol Barwick said. “The meetings bring up a lot of things you didn’t know. People ask questions and the answers are shared with everyone, or you can wait and talk to the speaker afterward. I wish more people would realize what’s here.”

Seniors who attend the meetings enhance their social lives. Keeping up with friends and acquaintances and staying active are proven ways to live longer and happier lives.

ProHealth Care also learns from the seniors, who share their experiences, expectations and preferences with ProHealth staff, Hill said.

All area residents 60 and older are invited to participate in the ProHealth Senior Breakfast Club. Meetings are held once a month in Waukesha and Oconomowoc. A light breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. The educational program runs from 9 to 10 a.m. Advance registration is required at ProHealthCare.org/Classes or by calling 262-928-2745.
