ProHealth Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital brings new linear accelerator for cancer care on line

ProHealth Care has a new linear accelerator for providing advanced image-guided cancer radiotherapy at ProHealth Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital.

“This addition to our cancer services enhances the level of care available for patients in the western part of our service area,” said Sloan Maes, ProHealth Care’s director of oncology services. “It allows us to provide leading-edge care close to home. It’s part of our ongoing commitment to continuously improve quality of care, patient experience and efficiency.”

Linear accelerators target tumor tissue with prescribed doses of high-energy X-rays, destroying cancer cells while sparing surrounding tissue.

The new Varian Medical VitalBeam system uses intensity-modulated radiation therapy, which allows for the delivery of precise radiation doses to specific areas within a cancer tumor. It also features faster, higher dose delivery rates.

The new linear accelerator has:

  • Intelligent automation that reduces the number of steps needed for imaging, positioning and treating patients, resulting in faster treatments.

  • A system that guides therapists through the steps of even the most complex treatments.

  • Controls for therapists to integrate imaging, treatment and motion management.

In addition, the new technology compensates for patient motion such as breathing, ensuring that patients receive therapy only when the tumor is in the precise position targeted for the radiation.
