Volunteen program provides opportunities for teenagers
Our Volunteen program offers teens the opportunity to volunteer in the hospital setting two hours per week. As a college-age volunteer, we require 100 hours per year.
We accept registrations and conduct training sessions two times per year. Registration forms are available during the month of April. In May, we host a mandatory parent/child informational meeting, as well as a one-day mandatory training session in June (after school is out for summer). Fall registration forms are available in September and the mandatory parent/child informational meeting is held in October and the mandatory training session takes place at the end of October.
Dog therapy visits promote health and wellness
Animals have been long recognized as a positive addition to the healing process. Visits from therapy dogs have shown to promote an increase in calmness, happiness and overall emotional health. Studies have shown a decrease in blood pressure and stress levels during a therapy dog visit. These therapy visits help break up the daily routine of illness for patients, visitors and staff.
Oconomowoc Memorial’s therapy dog program is organized through the Volunteer/Auxiliary Services Department. Dogs and their handlers need to complete a certification program and must provide documentation of health and wellness requirements for the dog. We welcome patient visits seven days a week. If you’d like more information on our dog therapy program, please call 262-569-0293.
Tele-Care offers reassurance via phone calls
Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital also offers a special program for at-home seniors called Tele-Care. As a volunteer, you receive calls from Tele-Care participants between the hours of 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. each day. If phone calls do not come in from program participants, you take steps to call names on a list, like neighbors and family, and if necessary, notify the police who will visit participant homes in person to check on the person’s health.
If you know someone who would be interested in the Tele-Care program as a participant or volunteer, please call 262-569-0293.
