Women & Heart Disease

The Female Heart

The signs of a heart attack in women can be subtle. Your reaction shouldn't be.

Heart disease is the leading killer of women. With this in mind, ProHealth Care -- Waukesha and Oconomowoc Memorial Hospitals -- has partnered with the American Heart Association and the Go Red for Women movement. Our commitment is to help women learn more about the female-specific signs and symptoms of heart disease, and how important it is to act quickly if women experience a heart attack -- especially if she's among the 83% of women right here in Waukesha County who have at least one risk factor for heart disease.

Being informed and knowing how to recognize signs of a heart attack are important, but not enough. It's also essential that women seek medical treatment within one hour of symptom onset. This is when drugs and other treatments will be most effective.
