The Healing Benefits of Massage

Medical research confirms that therapeutic massage offers many healing and recovery benefits. Massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, enhances the function of joints and muscles, improves circulation and flexibility and relieves mental and physical fatigue.

Massage Therapy Techniques

Massage therapists at the Behavioral Medicine Center, ProHealth Care Medical Associates and Crossings offer a variety of massage therapy techniques to meet individual needs:

Deep tissue – therapists use pressure and friction to massage deep tissues. Often used to alleviate pain, adhesions or "knotted" muscles.

Myofascial release – slow, maintained pressure to allow muscles to soften and elongate for better flexibility.

Stress reduction and relaxation massage – a system of long strokes, kneading and friction techniques combined with movements of the joints to promote general relaxation, improve circulation and relieve muscle tension. This is the most common type of massage.

Trigger point – involves direct pressure on key points of the body that are in pain. The goal of this technique is to interrupt the spasm / pain cycle within the body's nervous and muscular systems.

Reflexology – the gentle stimulation of the reflexes in the foot that correspond to other parts of the body for relaxation.
