Prenatal testing generally begins with your first prenatal visit and continues throughout pregnancy. Most tests are performed on a routine basis, others may be ordered by your doctor.
In your first trimester you will have blood and urine tests to help assess your health. A urine sample is obtained to rule out urinary tract infection, kidney disease and diabetes. A blood sample may be drawn to check blood type, blood count, Rh factor, immunity to Rubella (German measles), presence of antibodies and to rule out hepatitis, syphilis (a state law), and HIV. This is usually performed after the first office visit.
