Cancer Second Opinion Programs: FAQs

Answers to questions frequently asked by patients

Won't I offend my doctor if I seek a second opinion?

Getting a second opinion does not mean that you don't trust your doctor. He or she will understand that you need to be absolutely sure to receive the best treatment for you and the type of cancer. In fact, most doctors urge you to get a second opinion.

Does insurance cover a second opinion?

Some insurance plans will pay for second opinions while others will not. It's best to check with your health insurance provider about your particular situation.

Who will receive the results of my second opinion?

You can designate the person or provider to receive your report. This may include your personal physician and anyone else involved in your treatment.

What steps do I need to take to get a second opinion?

Complete this online form and a second opinion coordinator will contact you the next business day. Each specialized nurse coordinator is an experienced oncology nurse who can answer your questions and arrange for your appointments or other next steps.

Please remember that a second opinion from the Regional Cancer Center does not obligate you to receive treatment from ProHealth Care.
