Tips for Better Sleep

Sleep better. Feel better.

Did you know that an estimated 40 million people in the U.S. are affected by a sleep disorder? Its no wonder with the current economic situation, balance of work and family lives, and the every day to do list, that many Americans are struggling with sleep each night. Here are some tips to help you achieve a better nights sleep.

  1. Keep regular hours by going to bed and getting up at the same time every day.
  2. Stay away from stimulants so you can get deep sleep, which is most refreshing. Have caffeine in the morning and avoid all stimulants in the evening, including chocolate, caffeinated sodas, and caffeinated teas.
  3. Use your bed just for sleeping- not for other activities like watching TV, using laptop computers or reading.
  4. Avoid bright light around the house before bedtime.
  5. Avoid exercise near bedtime.
  6. Don't go to bed hungry- have a light snack, but avoid a heavy meal before bed.
  7. Don't look at the clock if you wake up in the middle of the night. It can cause anxiety.
  8. Don't stress if you feel you're not getting enough sleep - it will just make matters worse. Know you will sleep eventually.
  9. If you can't get to sleep for more than 30 minutes, get out of bed and do something boring in dim light until you're sleepy.
  10. If you have a sleeping partner, ask them if they notice any snoring, leg movements and/or pauses in your breathing.
