ProHealth Care was the first in Waukesha County to offer hip resurfacing as an alternative to traditional total hip replacement. Now, our Orthopedic Center is pleased to be the first in the county to provide the anterior hip – or muscle sparing – procedure, available at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital.
"My anterior hip replacement was the greatest bit of medical technology that I could ever have experienced. I experienced very little pain after surgery, and the less invasive method accelerated my recovery so that I got back on my feet quicker. The very next day, I was walking with a walker,. One week later, I was walking without a cane." - Thomas O'Malley, Delafield
Accelerated recovery time – The anterior approach is referred to as muscle-sparing because it avoids cutting muscles at the side or back of the leg and therefore reduces muscle damage.
Fewer restrictions during recovery – Patients can often more freely bend their hip and bear their full weight immediately or very soon after surgery.
Reduced scarring – The anterior approach allows for one relatively small incision.
Less discomfort – Less discomfort during the recovery period.
The anterior approach is typically made possible through the use of a high-tech operating table that places the leg and pelvis in a stable position. This specially engineered table includes leg supports that allow the surgeon to adjust the operative leg during surgery with greater precision and control. The table also provides the surgeon with better access to the femur, or thighbone, in order to position the implant most effectively.
Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital's OR is equipped with this table. Read a national article about an alternative, less invasive procedure, offered right here at ProHealth Care
