MRI is a diagnostic procedure that uses a combination of a large magnet, radio frequencies, and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body. An MRI is often used:

  • to examine the heart, brain, liver, pancreas, male and female reproductive organs, and other soft tissues
  • to assess blood flow
  • to detect tumors and diagnose many forms of cancer
  • to evaluate infections
  • to assess injuries to bones and joints

What are the Benefits of MRI?

  • Images of soft-tissues such as the heart, lungs, liver and other organs are clearer and more detailed than with other imaging techniques.
  • MRI images can help your doctor evaluate function as well as the structure of many organs.
  • MRI provides a fast, non-invasive alternative to X-ray angiography for diagnosing problems of the heart and cardiovascular system.
  • MRI can detect abnormal tissue that might be hidden by bone tissue when other imaging techniques are used.
