What’s precision medicine?

Precision medicine is an approach that helps doctors choose cancer treatments based on the unique genetic makeup of your cancer. You may also hear this called precision oncology, personalized medicine or targeted therapy.

Benefits of precision medicine

If precision medicine is an option, your care team may be able to match treatments to the unique features of your cancer. Some cancers have gene changes that make certain medicines more effective. Identifying these changes helps providers choose treatments that are more likely to help you.

Tumor genetic testing

Genetic testing looks for changes in the genes of cancer cells. This information can help your care team understand how the cancer may grow and which treatments may work best.

Targeted therapy clinical trials

Some ProHealth Care patients may be able to take advantage of cancer clinical trials. These trials can offer access to new tests and treatments that are not yet widely available.
