An orthopedic specialist, also often referred to as an orthopedic surgeon, specializes in diagnosing and working to correct medical problems related to bones, joints, tendons and ligaments. These medical problems may be the result of aging, birth defects or injury. Some orthopedic specialists maintain a general medical practice, while others specialize in a specific area of orthopedics. These specialties commonly include joint replacement and hand surgery.
Supportive care for rehabilitation and recovery
Physical therapists (PT) work to maximize a patient's quality of life by focusing on movement potential. They develop care plans that use techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function and prevent disability. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness and wellness programs for healthier, more active lifestyles. Physical therapists provide care for people in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private practices, sports and fitness facilities and worksites. More about physical therapy.
Occupational therapists (OTs) work on the assessment and treatment of conditions that affect an individual’s ability to perform daily tasks ranging from self care to high-level, job-related activities. In addition, OTs design treatment plans and assist patients with a variety of activities to improve function, visual, cognitive and general coordination skills. More about occupational therapy.
