Image Guided Biopsies

A biopsy is the removal of tissue from any part of the body in order to examine it for disease. Some may remove a small tissue sample with a needle while others may surgically remove a suspicious nodule or lump.

An image guided biopsy is generally performed when an abnormal mass or lump has been found in an organ (thyroid, liver, kidney, lung) or body part (bone, abdomen, pelvis, lymph nodes). A biopsy is the most definitive way to determine if the abnormal tissue is cancerous. Imaging studies alone cannot always provide a diagnosis and treatment options.

During a biopsy, a small amount of tissue is removed from the abnormal area with a needle so a pathologist can examine the material for abnormal cells. Radiologists use image guidance (ultrasound or CT) in performing biopsies to obtain tissue from the right spot and to avoid injuring nearby healthy tissue.

These biopsies allow a radiologist to access hard to reach areas of the body without surgery, but with the same or even better accuracy than a surgical biopsy. The specific type of biopsy chosen by your doctor will depend on the location of the lump and other circumstances.

Image Guided vs. Surgical Biopsies

Reasons for choosing an image guided biopsy rather than a surgical biopsy include:

  • Smaller incision
  • Limited or no stitches
  • Minimal bruising and scar
  • Shorter procedure
  • Less expensive
  • Faster results

Biopsy – Bone

Bone biopsy uses a needle and imaging guidance to remove a small sample of bone for examination under a microscope. Bone biopsies may be used to confirm the diagnosis of a bone disorder, investigate an abnormality, determine the cause of pain or infection, or distinguish bone tumor from other conditions. Needle biopsy is less invasive than surgical biopsy and may not require general anesthesia.

Biopsy - Breast, MR Guided

Magnetic resonance- or MR-guided breast biopsy uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to help locate a breast lump or abnormality and guide a needle to remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. It does not use ionizing radiation and leaves little to no scarring.

Biopsy - Breast, Stereotactic

Stereotactic breast biopsy uses mammography – a specific type of breast imaging that uses low-dose x-rays – to help locate a breast lump or abnormality and remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. It’s less invasive than surgical biopsy, leaves little to no scarring and can be an excellent way to evaluate calcium deposits or tiny masses that are not visible on ultrasound.

Biopsy - Breast, Ultrasound Guided

An ultrasound-guided breast biopsy uses sound waves to help locate a lump or abnormality and remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. It is less invasive than surgical biopsy, leaves little to no scarring and does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation.

Biopsy – Lung or Chest Nodule

Needle biopsy of the lung uses imaging guidance to help locate a nodule or abnormality and remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. A biopsy may be necessary when imaging tests cannot confirm that a nodule is benign, or a nodule cannot be reached by bronchoscopy or other methods. Needle biopsy is less invasive than surgical biopsy and may not require general anesthesia.

Biopsy – Thyroid

An ultrasound-guided thyroid biopsy uses sound waves to help guide placement of a needle within a nodule or abnormality to remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. Needle aspiration biopsy is less invasive than surgical biopsy, leaves little to no scarring and does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation.
